Be adventurous in selecting temporary facilities, says CKS

A new wave of refurbishment is happening as schools take another look at their kitchens and educational catering finally gets better funding.

Container Kitchen Systems (CKS), one of the UK’s leading suppliers of temporary kitchens, is being called in to supply temporary facilities to schools and colleges while the permanent sites are refurbished or rebuilt, and has noticed a trend. In many cases school caterers are stunned to find that the temporary kitchens they use whilst refurbishing are far more advanced and sophisticated than they'd expected.

This is a good reason for being adventurous when choosing facilities to tide you over a refurbishment, argues CKS managing director Mark Kingston.

"So we are finding that when many catering managers design their ideal new kitchen, they ask us for a temporary kitchen that's as much like the old one as possible. They worry about not disrupting the catering while the existing premises are refreshed or rebuilt.

"But they ought not to worry. If you are planning a new or refurbished kitchen, then being adventurous with your temporary one is often by far the best idea. It can give you extra ideas as you rebuild, and you can test new layouts or new equipment. And making a difference is what refurbishment is normally all about. Anything less is just a spring clean".

So a temporary kitchen should probably be more experimental and advanced than a refurbishment, not less, he argues. It's the cheapest way of trying out the most advanced equipment, to see if it delivers the savings and efficiency demanded.

Another major worry for school caterers is the ever-tightening food and hygiene legislation. This is something that it's easier to handle with CKS's temporary kitchen facilities, which always meet the very latest regulations.
